On the long drive back to my house, he reached across his center console to take my hand in his. “I saw you speaking to some of the ladies…”

You mean the Stepford Wives?”

“Yeah, them,” he laughed. “How did that go? Or should I even ask?”

“Let’s just say I’m sure I made a lasting impression,” I gave his hand a squeeze

I still couldn’t help feeling the gnawing of doubt trying to rise in me; why had he pursued me so? I made it clear that I wasn’t looking for, didn’t want a relationship. I guess the mixed signals from my open legs, could have played against my words. We still knew so little about each other though. Maybe we would get to know each other, then decide against this whole mine thing. I wasn’t an impulsive creature. Everything I did had to be well planned. How had he snuck under my radar?

Then there was Daniel. He spelled it out for me; he’ll never choose you. What if this WAS a game for Tyler? Just bending me to his will. He could make me want him, crave him, just to abandon me later. But, I did know something his rich shoulder-rubbers didn’t. He and I, we were of the same breed, enjoyed the same pastime. One, I’m sure, no one else would ever understand.

Tyler broke me from my thoughts, “Can I ask you a question?”

“Oh God, I hate that question,” I said.

“You don’t even know what I’m going to ask,” he laughed.

“No, I mean the can I ask you a question, question,” I shook my head. “No one ever knows what they’re agreeing to talk about when someone asks this of them.”

Tyler nodded, “Good point. I’ll just ask and you can decide if you’ll tell me, or choose not to answer.”

I let out a sigh, “Okay, hit me with it!”

“When did you start hunting?” Tyler asked seriously.

I knew one day we’d talk about it: my breaking point, when I shattered. I sat mute long enough to make Tyler wonder if this was one of those things I wouldn’t talk about.

“When my husband died,” I began. “I found out in a horrifying way that he had been cheating on me. In fact, the act of cheating directly led to his death.”

Tyler nodded, keeping his eyes on the road.

“I was living inside the world he had created for me. A world that made me into the woman I was. What I thought, what I felt, what I believed, what I was completely certain of…it wasn’t real. None of it was real. In one moment, my house of cards, came tumbling down.”

“So…that’s when you were born?”

I had never heard it put this way. But as I rolled the wording around in my head, I began to nod, “Yes.”

“So, was your first kill here in Florida?”

“Yes,” I confirmed. “What about you?” I figured tit for tat.

“Mine started much younger and all of them were here.”

I had had a question stirring that I wanted to ask, so I did.
